In the elegant Departmental Olive Green livery, this Civil Engineers YGH Sealion Wagon is a newly tooled delight. It features intricate detailing such as guard rails, handwheels, catwalks, brake equipment and buffers, as well as a precision moulded bodyshell.
A mainstay of engineering trains for many years, these ballast wagons would transport and deposit fresh ballast on top of newly laid track via the chute located between the bogies, and could be seen operating with a huge variety of locomotive traction over their lifetime – from BR Blue diesels in the 70’s, to Civil Engineers ‘Dutch’ 31, 37 & 47s in the 90’s, and finally Class 66s in the privatised era.
These ‘fishy’ wagons are sure to be a staple of your TT:120 wagon pool for many years to come!
The ‘Sealion’ and ‘Seacow’ wagons have three discharge chutes, one to the outside of each rail and one in the centre to fill between the sleepers. At each end of the wagon is a platform with three large handwheels to control each of the chute doors. Hundreds of these 40-ton capacity wagons were built at both Shildon and Ashford Works.
