Haydn (1732-1809)
Description:
Haydn composed his trio for one or more flutes with the English market in mind. In fact, the flute was especially favored by the aristocracy, who found it effortless and infinitely pleasurable. The Trio Hob.XV/15-17 was commissioned by a London publisher, who wanted a flute composition with a cello and keyboard. The "London Trio," conceived during Haydn's second visit to England, features a close dialogue between the two flutes. Both pieces show Haydn's ingenuity at its best, with moments of elegance, surprise, joy, lightness, and not forgetting moments of intense expression. The minor part in particular has a depth that makes it hard to believe that this work was written for aristocratic pleasure. Despite the small number of performers, Haydn's mastery of instrumental composition is evident in the almost symphonic style he employs and the clarity of his style that he does not lose.
