Kes is a 1969 film directed by Ken Loach & produced by Tony Garnett. It was adapted from the 1968 novel A Kestrel for a Knave, written by Barnsley-born author Barry Hines. It is a gritty expose of the harshness of working-class existence in 1960s Northern England. It tells the story of Billy Casper, a boy whose life has little hope & whose home & school-life is marked with abuse, bullying & youthful mischief. Despite the limitations of such, he finds self-confidence in the art of falconry, which he takes up with enthusiasm on finding and raising a stray Kestrel-chick. The film takes a tragic twist when his older brother Jud kills the bird in an act of revenge for Billy failing to place a bet with money with which he had been entrusted.
The film is very much of the tradition of this time in British film-making, & is an example of kitchen-sink drama which sought to portray life as realistically as possible. The British Film Institute has ranked this film 7th in its list of top-ten British films.
