The distinguished tenor sax and bass tandem of John Coltrane and Paul Chambers recorded 58 separate sessions together, beginning with an October 27, 1955 Miles Davis Quintet date –which also included pianist Red Garland and drummer Philly Joe Jones– and ending with Coltrane’s legendary New Jersey, May 23, 1961 recording of Africa Brass, that featured Chambers on the song “The Damned Don’t Cry.” Chambers’ Music was recorded in a quartet format with Coltrane as the only horn, and issued on the Aladdin/Jazz West label under Chambers’ name.
