The Wignacourt Museum is a baroque palace constructed in the carly 17th century and enlarged in the 18th century. It was the residence of the chaplains of the Order who were founded by Grand Master Aloph de Wignacourt to officiate St Paul’s Grotto.
Following the departure of the Order from Malta the chaplains were replaced by the diocesan clergy.
In 1981 the building was converted to a Museum. It includes a vast complex of catacombs, an underground passage to St Paul’s Grotto, a labyrinth of World War II shelters, two historic gardens, a baroque chapel, archeological artefacts, a picture gallery, old ecclesiastical furniture and historical and musical archives.
