Logwood comes from the heartwood of the tropical Haematoxylum campechianum, also known as Campeche, bloodwood, “Uitzquauitl” (Nahuatl Aztec), and “Huitzcuahuitl” (Nahuatl Aztec). Since the 16th century, logwood has been one of the most famous dyewoods in the world, producing purples, blacks, and deep blues prized by European dyers. It was a major export from Central America and even the cause of pirate conflicts in the Caribbean.

Did you know? When first introduced to Europe in the 16th century, logwood was banned in England (1581) because its brilliant purples and blacks proved fugitive. But the color was too beautiful to keep it from the market, and logwood became one of the most important dyestuffs of the 17th and 18th centuries.
