Features

An Arts & Crafts English oak dressing chest by Arthur W. Simpson (The Handicrafts, Kendal) made in c. 1920. A classic Simpson design and a practical and stylish piece of furniture. Items of Simpson Furniture rarely come to the market, featuring:
  • 2 short and one long drawer (constructed with single plank fronts and hand-cut lap and through dovetails)
  • 2 plank top with chip carved decoration to the edge
  • Square legs joined by a stretcher with exposed tenon

  • overall depth 56 cm (1 foot 10 inches)
  • overall width 107 cm (3 feet 6 and a quarter inches)

This design in shown in 'The Simpsons of Kendal: Craftsmen in Wood' by Eleanor Davidson, University of Lancaster Visual Arts Centre, 1978, Figure 73, 'Dressing Table and mirror, oak made for Littleholme L42 ins 2605 1910'. Littleholme was Simpson's own home, designed by C. F. A. Voysey. The design is also illustrated on page 8 of the Arthur W. Simpson 'Woodcraft' catalogue '2605a Dressing Table in Oak'. A similar example sold at Woolley & Wallis' Arts & Crafts Auction on 19 Jun 2013 Lot 411

Condition

About Arts & Crafts Lakes School Furniture

The Arts & Crafts Lakes School was a development of the Arts and Craft Cotswold School. The most significant designers and makers were Arthur Simpson, in Kendal, Stanley Webb Davies at Windermere and the Keswick School of Industrial Arts. Peter Hall of Staveley still produces furniture in this tradition. The Lakes School maintained the ideals with its simple lines, attention to the finest of details, the use of beautiful locally materials and the focus traditional tools and techniques. In fact Stanley Webb Davies' workshop didn't use any power tools at all, even to cut logs from timber!The dominant material was English Oak and typical decorative details often include exposed joints and subtle carved details
