This German Reich issue comes from the turbulent inflationary period of 1923, when postal rates changed so rapidly that older stamps were overprinted with new values. The base design shows a farmer sowing seed, originally issued in green. It has been surcharged with a bold black “15 Tausend” (15,000 Marks) to meet soaring postal costs. The dramatic overprint and obliteration of the original value reflect the peak of Germany’s economic crisis. Such inflation issues are highly collectible as historical reminders of the Weimar Republic’s instability and are prized for their variety of overprints and postal uses.
