Coix lacryma-jobi, commonly called Job’s Tears or Adlay, is a unique tropical cereal and ornamental grass valued for both its attractive seeds and nutritional grains. Native to Southeast Asia, this fast-growing grass produces tear-shaped seeds that are naturally hard, glossy, and often used for making rosaries, jewelry, and decorative crafts.
Beyond its ornamental value, Adlay grain is widely consumed in Asia as a traditional food and herbal remedy. The grains are rich in protein, fiber, and minerals, making them a nutritious ingredient in soups, teas, porridge, and herbal medicine. In Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and other folk systems, Job’s Tears are known for their anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and digestive health benefits.
The plant grows up to 1–2 meters tall, thrives in warm and humid climates, and is easy to cultivate in gardens, farms, or pots. It prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.
