This is an antique handmade fox and geese game board, with more than enough hand-carved wooden pegs to play (plus a few more of another sort that fit the holes as well.) There is a handwritten verse on the reverse, readable with some effort, beginning "Be happy in life...," making me think this was likely made as a gift for a child, or perhaps as a wedding gift long ago. The rules for fox and geese--a 2 player strategy game dating back to the Middle Ages--are readily accessible out there; essentially, one player controls a single "fox" aiming to capture the "geese," while the other player commands the flock of 13 geese, trying to trap the fox so it cannot move. With what feels like no good news in the world, and AI taking over, perhaps now is just the right time to revert to playing old-school tabletop games, and this a lovely board to have sitting on the table the rest of the time.
