Newport's Pearl Diggers played Class D ball in the Northeast Arkansas League during the 1909 season, a brief but proud chapter in small-town baseball. Newport, Arkansas was mussel shell country along the White River, giving the club its distinctive name. Teams like this carried entire communities through long summers before the modern game left them behind. Part of our Defunct Baseball collection, inspired by the vintage Minor League teams of yesteryear.
