The concept of en primeur, or “wine futures,” began in Bordeaux. Small allocations of sought-after wines were offered to insiders while still maturing in barrel. Buyers would pay in advance to secure their share, long before release. For merchants, it was a way to gauge excitement and potential; for collectors, it was an opportunity to secure something rare and valuable at the source.
