What is a gusset?

A gusset is simply the space at the bottom of the bag when standing up, sort of like the "depth" of the bag. Gussets allow for a little more space to fit bulkier objects - the wider the gusset, the deeper the bag can extend out to. The bags can be packed laying flat for easy storage under the counter in a retail store.
