The 3100-MCM is a high-performance communication gateway developed by ProSoft Technology to bridge the gap between Rockwell Automation backplanes and the Modbus network protocol. Functioning as a versatile "translator," this module allows a PLC to act as either a Modbus Master or a Modbus Slave. It facilitates the seamless integration of non-Rockwell devices—such as power monitors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and flow meters—directly into the controller's I/O memory map. By offloading the complex Modbus polling and framing logic from the PLC’s main processor, the 3100-MCM ensures deterministic data exchange and maintains high system throughput in demanding industrial environments.
The following hardware and protocol parameters define the operational capabilities of the 3100-MCM:
Manufacturer: ProSoft Technology
Module Type: Modbus Master/Slave Communication Module
Protocol Support: Modbus RTU and Modbus ASCII
Physical Layer Interfaces:
RS-232C (Hardware handshaking supported)
RS-422 (Long-distance point-to-point)
RS-485 (Multi-drop networking for up to 32 nodes)
Command Management:
Capacity: Up to 100 fully configurable command entries
Polling: Continuous automatic polling of the command list
Data Capacity:
Internal Registers: 4,000 registers available for user data
Transfer: Blocks of data mapped directly to PLC ladder logic
Diagnostics & Error Handling:
Real-time error codes passed to PLC registers
Event-driven bit and register write support
Environmental & Physical:
Mounting: Single-slot rack-mounted in Rockwell Automation backplanes
Operating Temp: 0°C to 60°C (32°F to 140°F)
Vibration/Shock: 5g vibration (10–150 Hz); 30g operational shock
Humidity: 5% to 95% RH (Non-condensing)
The 3100-MCM provides maximum flexibility for system integrators. When configured as a Modbus Master, the module actively queries slave devices on the network, storing the retrieved data in its 4,000-register internal database for the PLC to read. Conversely, in Slave Mode, the module acts as a passive data server, allowing external SCADA systems or other Masters to read from and write to the PLC's memory. The module's ability to handle event-driven writes ensures that critical status changes are transmitted immediately rather than waiting for the next polling cycle, significantly reducing latency in safety-sensitive applications.
