The Acer palmatum var. atropurpureum 'Bloodgood'. This is the classic purple leaved Japanese Maple that you most often see around town. There's a reason for that - they're freaking beautiful. When designing a garden, any garden, you can do worse than starting with the 'Bloodgood' and going from there. Retains its color well throughout the summer.
