In the late '70s, Golden Dragon played at the legendary Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco, alongside other homegrown pre-punk bands (Leland, Nuclear Valdez, etc.). Bandleader Fred Ancheta echoed the punk zeitgeist, incorporating frenetic energy into the group's sound and self-releasing their records with handmade sleeves.
Golden Dragon's sole LP from 1981 was originally pressed in a hyper-limited run (only a few dozen copies are known to have survived).
Featuring Ancheta's fuzz bass and his brother Jose on guitar, the album is clearly indebted to Hendrix and West Coast psych.
Subliminal Sounds' limited edition reissue marks the first time this Bay Area classic has been more widely available.
