Amazon and other large corporations have started adopting an independent contractor-based employment model for sections of their business. The “gig economy”—which spans information technology, transportation, and several other job market sectors—is appealing because it potentially reduces a company’s overhead and legal liability.

Joe Fried and his partner Michael Goldberg of Fried Goldberg recently secured a $16.2 million jury verdict against Amazon. In one of the first cases of its kind, Fried and Goldberg successfully argued that Amazon exerted significant control over their independent contractors, and should therefore be held financially liable under a broader set of terms. The verdict in this case is likely to fuel further litigation against companies that rely on contractor-based models, particularly in sectors like logistics, delivery, and rideshare services.

Join Joe Fried for a 90-minute webinar that broadly explores:

  • The three types of Amazon cases
  • An overview of what makes Amazon cases unique and challenging
  • Theories of liability against Amazon (and its drivers and delivery partners)
  • How to prove vicarious liability against a driver who Amazon claims is an independent contractor

Additionally, Fried will discuss specific strategies and lessons learned in his recent Amazon trial, including:

  • The motion to seal the trial
  • His proven strategy for a short jury selection (in this case, 45 minutes)
  • Cross-examining the driver and owner of the delivery service provider
  • The decision not to call Amazon 30(b)(6), except on training
  • How to prudently use accident reconstruction witness accounts

For any attorney who is up against a company shirking their liability in a “gig economy” business model, this webinar will be indispensable.
